Role in FIRE-ADAPT: co-leader of the thematic area “biodiversity conservation”

Organisation: Institut d’écologie et des sciences de l’environnement de Paris (iEES), Sorbonne Université

Country: France

What motivated me to join FIRE-ADAPT

We are questioning whether fire could be part of the landscape and if so, how. To me, that’s quite interesting because I live in the South of France, where the system is fire-dominated but fire is forbidden.

What my area of work  in the project pursues

We are mostly looking at how plants and animals deal with fire. Do they need it? What does it do to them?

Some of them are in trouble when you remove fire because their habitat is lost, or they directly depend on fire to survive. For example, there are many plants that hate shade. When you remove fire, the vegetation grows creating shade, so there´s no more space for them and they die.

What we are going to do within this area of work

We are going to summarise the knowledge that we have about these species that need or hate fire. Furthermore, we are going to make an easy method to use for everyone to describe and better understand the system. Finally, we are going to monitor the biodiversity in different areas.

What strengths of the partners come together in this area of work

It has very different people joining in: those who directly start the fire, know very well the fire behaviour, and understand better the social perceptioin of fire, and those who understand very well the method to monitor the biodiversity.

This is me

Favourite food: aloco

Favourite film: Arizona Dream, by Emir Kusturica

I admire: nearly everyone. Everyone got amazing strenghts ir skilss of their own.

Superpower I´d like to have: be able to express exactly what I think.

In France, I´d take you to: Garrigue, where the vegetation smells good , is very nayghty, wih a lot of thorns, and can burn in the summer.
