Role in FIRE-ADAPT: early stage researcher
Organisation: Università di Torino (UniTo)
Country: Italy
What motivated me to join FIRE-ADAPT
FIRE-ADAPT is a great opportunity to exchange information and build relationships with other researchers. I think it’s a challenge, but also a chance to see how the researchers work, treat topics that we are studying as well and face certain problems with data, software and methods. Furthermore, there are two-side benefits: I can give a little support and receive it. So, understanding which data, methods, and information people use and how to maybe amplify our horizons in those terms.
What my area of expertise is
For my research project, I’m dealing with different effects of models of land governance on the fire regimes. I´m understanding if managing the land with, for example, sustainable forestry or agropastoral activities can have an effect on wildfire regimes. It’s quite a multi sectorial subject because I work on aspects related to biodiversity and policy, which fits very well into the FIRE-ADAPT framework.
About my secondment with CTFC in Spain, during the project´s gathering at its Spain Study Hub
How it benefited me
Certainly, having got in touch with researchers with research questions that are very similar to the ones we have at the Università di Torino helps us improve the quality of our research. During the gathering, I met and got in touch with researchers from all around the world. It was very interesting to see how they deal with issues that we also have but in different settings and with different approaches.
How similar and different the realities of wildfires in Italy and Spain are
They are totally different. It was very interesting going on field trips in Spain and see how the environment, in terms of topography and vegetation, is totally different from the Alpine environment in which we are used to work in Italy. For instance, we saw in Spain that there are environments where fires had effects that I thought were kind of homogeneous. In Italy, I would say that there’s more diversity in our study areas, so the effects of fires are more heterogeneous and the outcomes are more diverse.
What caught my attention about Spain
The setting was very nice, in particular the building of CTFC, in Solsona: its structure is very developed and modern, and counts on great facilities. Also, Solsona is a really lovely town. It’s good size, which allowed me to bumped into colleagues from FIRE-ADAPT after the official meetings and socialise with them when I was walking around the town. Finally, I love Spain and its traditions, like the tapas.
